For all Handball techniques the hand is opened, the fingers are close together, the thumb is next to the fingers and the finger tips are slightly curved to reach a certain tension in the hand. The hit area is the ball of the hand. At the strike/shock the arm is rotated so that the palm of the hand is pointing with the ball forward. The force pulse comes from a rotary motion of the hip.
From inexperienced side and from beginners the handball shock is often made substantially harder than the conventional fist or knuckle punch. The handball is rightly regarded as less sensitive than the knuckles of the hand. Purely psychological is the urge toward vigorous strikes much higher at the use of own insensitive parts of the body.
