Among UKE waza is meant in the Asian martial arts techniques, the defense of atemi waza (punching and kicking techniques). Uke comes from the verb Ukeru, this can be translated like get , arrive, receive, meet, catch, reply, reply However, Uke also stands for the receiving exercise partner, the partner on whon the technique is practiced. In the Uke waza are mostly used the extremities, arms (Ude) and legs (Ashi) to block or useing sweeping techniques; actively or passively to perform in order to the best protection of yourself and your own body from attacks. By using the defense techniques, striking techniques can be derived, rerouted, or stopped and contact attacks can be blew or resolved.
In any case, this defense techniques must be supported by appropriate postures (Kamae) and movements. The primary goal at training practice of uke waza is to reduce the decision time to a minimum. If walking into the attack the decision which block technique must be made instinctively; "with the wisdom of the body" and not with the eyes.

In the variety of martial arts, there are various classifications of defense techniques:

  • by height (Jodan, upper area; Chudan, middle area; Gedan, lower area)
  • by type of execution (sweeping, blocking, solving)
  • by direction (inner, outer, upper)
  • by used extremitie (Arm, Leg)

In the following, the classification be used after the extremity:

  • Defense techniques with the hand - Te uke waza
  • Defense techniques with the forearm - Ude uke waza
  • Defense techniques with the leg - Ashi uke waza
  • Defense techniques with the stick - Hanbo uke waza
