Ukemi waza - Falling techniques

Mae ukemi - falling forwards

Keywords:
forward, hard fall, body tension, head to the side

Falling forward in Japanese martial arts called Mae ukemi. While falling forward is to look primarily to the fact that the head is turned to the side, otherwise it may happen, that the nose will be "flat". Mae ukemi belongs to the group of "hard falls".

Execution:

One falls from the upright stand straight forward. Make sure of a strong body tension. Just before the contact with the ground, the head is turned to the left or to the right and slightly raised in order not to hit the face (nose) to the ground. Both arms are raised so that the thumbs are at ear level, in order to knock off with both angled arms, a shoring up with the hands must be avoided, because the wrists and elbows can be injured.

Beginners and young jujutsuka can also perform this falling techniques in the form that they were initially dropped from a standstill to their knees and then conduct Mae ukemi from the kneeling position. In the further course of training, the advanced jujutsuka perform this kind of falling from a jump.

Common mistakes:

  • Lower and upper arms do not meet the ground at the same time (risk of injury to the shoulder and elbow joints)
  • Head does not rotate to the side, the nose hits to the ground (injuries to the nose and head)
  • Arms are angled but not stretched forward (risk of injury to the shoulder joints)
